How to Care for Fresh Flowers In Your Home

When you have some flowers delivered to your home, it is always a great moment. It will put a smile on your face when you open the door and see the delivery boy standing there with an armload of fresh flowers. Though they are beautiful, cut flowers are also fragile. They start dying the moment they are cut. However, you can take steps to make fresh cut flowers last a lot longer. Here are some tips you can use to ensure that the flowers you have last as long as possible after they arrive in your home.

As soon as you get fresh flowers delivered to you, you need to take immediate action to help preserve them as long as possible. The first thing you need to do is to inspect the flowers. Remove any loose or wilted petals that you see. Also, remove the leaves from the lower parts of the stems. You should not have any leaves in the water that the flowers will rest in. Removing the leaves from the bottom of the stems will help to keep the water in the vase clear and healthy for the flowers.

The next step is trimming the stems. You want to cut off an inch or two from the bottom of the stems. You need to make this cut in a bowl of water or underneath a stream of running water. When you make the cuts under water, it prevents air from getting into the capillaries of the stem. Use a very sharp knife to make the cuts. Do not use scissors as they will squash the stem. Make the cuts at a 45-degree angle to allow for maximum water uptake. You will want to keep trimming the stems further every couple of days to allow them the best ability to absorb water.

After you have cut the flowers, you need to put them in a water-filled vase immediately. Only use a vase that has been thoroughly cleaned with hot, soapy water beforehand. Make sure that the vase has been thoroughly rinsed to remove any soap residue. You want the water that you put the flowers in to be cool and very clean.

There are many flowers that will continue to grow if you take care of them well. When flowers do continue to grow after they are cut, they will absorb enormous amounts of water to create this growth. Therefore, you need to check the water level in the vase a couple of times a day to make sure that your flowers do not dry out.

To help keep your cut flowers as healthy as possible, make sure to add commercial flower food packets to the water in the vase. This flower food will make cut flowers last much longer, and it will keep them looking as beautiful as possible. Also, you want to add a couple drops of bleach to the water to kill any microorganisms in it.
